You can have the career you want and you can raise your children in a positive, educational environment, aka day care.” She described it as “a lie to tell women that we can have it all.” Just because day care is “normal or common doesn’t mean it’s right,” according to Clark. Did you feel that shift?”Ĭlark claimed, “The feminist movement is in large part to blame for the fracturing of the traditional home, where women were coerced outside of their natural roles as mothers into the workforce.” She went on: “The feminist movement gave way to the notion that a woman could have her cake and eat it too. And one of those solutions was day care.” After an awkward pause, she added, “It just got real uncomfy. She described it as her “spiciest take,” saying that “a lot of mothers in the ‘70s” (the decade was the conference’s theme) “who desired freedom and flexibility or who didn’t necessarily have a support system were oblivious to the fact that the solutions presented to them as safe, liberating or harmless were anything but. It was on this topic that her speech veered from sleepy to bizarre. Just a few minutes into her speech she lost the room, and it got worse from there.Īttacking abortion and fertility care are not unique to Clark’s brand, but her opposition to day care is both a new and relatively isolated stance, and it didn’t land with the YWLS crowd. “Wow,” she responded, following up by asking, “How many of you are considering ditching hormonal birth control?” Even fewer hands went up. She asked the audience, “Who in this room has decided to ditch hormonal birth control?” Very few hands went up. She has staked her brand in part on spreading misinformation about birth control - it’s a regular feature of her podcasts POPlitics and The Spillover, as well as her prolific Instagram presence. I know you were all thinking it, right? What is that all about? By the way, this hotel better do something or we’re going to find another hotel because I’m not going to come back, this is ridiculous.”įor the next 30 minutes, she launched into a winding, pseudo-academic diatribe about the four lies of modern feminism, which according to Clark are birth control, abortion, fertility care, and day care. In his opening speech, TPUSA founder Charlie Kirk described his unsuccessful efforts to have the flag taken down: “I tried my best to take down the flag everybody,” he said. Much to my surprise, the first thing I saw when I pulled up to the venue was a massive pride flag. This tension drew me to attend the event in person in Grapevine, Texas, from June 9 to 11. The same goes for the vice president of events, Lauren Toncich.įorgoing a career in pursuit of marriage and motherhood is not something the women delivering this message can speak about from personal experience. Chief Marketing Officer Marina Minas’ biography says nothing of her achievements in the domestic realm. Behind the scenes, Turning Point USA’s events and marketing leadership are also populated by women. Speakers like TPUSA influencer Alex Clark, Fox host Laura Ingraham, and The Daily Wire’s Candace Owens both covertly and overtly discouraged the audience of young women from pursuing high-powered careers - but it takes a lot of work to build an audience as a woman in right-wing media. Yet this conference exists because of the labor of women on the right who clearly value their careers. These themes were nearly identical to last year’s YWLS. Speaker after speaker emphasized to the audience that they should become wives, mothers, and accessories to the astroturfed conservative movement rather than pursuing a demanding career. Turning Point USA’s Young Women’s Leadership Summit, which targets college and high-school age girls, grapples with these same contradictions in a much darker and more prescriptive way. This scenario totally boggles the normative masculinity of the contestants pursuing her. At the same time, her role is highly subversive to traditional norms of courtship - she’s “dating” 25 men at once. She is feminine, unattainable, a prize to be won, flirty, and non-threatening to masculinity - the ideal future wife. The woman crowned as the bachelorette each season represents a certain type of conformity. The dating show tries to awkwardly reconcile fundamentally opposed interpretations of gender roles in a woman’s pursuit of an opposite-sex partner. I’m fascinated by Turning Point USA’s Young Women’s Leadership Summit for the same reasons I watch ABC’s The Bachelorette. 7/22/2023 0 Comments Scrivener and simplenoteSimilarly, in Welsh, ysgrifennu is 'to write', ysgrifennwr is 'writer' and ysgrifennydd is 'secretary, scribe'. In the Irish language, a scríbhneoir is a writer, or a person who writes. In Japan, the word "scrivener" is used as the standard translation of shoshi ( 書士), in referring to legal professions such as judicial scriveners and administrative scriveners. The word comes from Middle English scriveiner, an alteration of obsolete scrivein, from Anglo-French escrivein, ultimately from Vulgar Latin * scriban-, scriba, itself an alteration of Latin scriba (scribe). In areas with very high literacy rates, they are far less common however, social services organizations, libraries, and the like sometimes offer assistance to service users with low literacy skills to help them fill out forms, draft official correspondence, and the like. Many now use portable typewriters to prepare letters for their clients. Scriveners remain common in countries where literacy rates remain low, for example India they read letters for illiterate customers, as well as write letters or fill out forms for a fee. We’ve put together a list of the 15 best free note-taking apps for iPad in 2021, some of which are also available in other operating systems.Public letter writer in Mexico, 1828, by Claudio Linati Simplenote is a free note-taking application that has a cult following. It is perfect for taking and organizing text notes and cannot be used to store web pages and clippings, which makes it the perfect choice for anyone who doesn’t need a lot of noisy features on their note-taking app. One of the things I like the most about Simplenote is that it plays well with a couple of other applications, so you can pair it up with some of your favorite tools such as Scrivener and Notational Velocity. Getting started on the app is easy, you can download it on your iPad from the Apple store and sign up with an email address and a password. Once you are logged in, you will find it very easy to navigate. It has a couple of buttons at the top of the page and a search bar to help you find your notes quickly. When you create new notes, they will accumulate on a column at the left of your home screen and you can select any one of them to view or edit later. Simplenote is a text-only application, so there’s no room for uploading images, audios, PDFs, or anything of that sort. This is surely a deal-breaker for a lot of people who require multimedia support, but if you are okay with keeping things as simple as possible, then I’d recommend Simplenote. ProsĮvernote is another popular cross-platform app that is available to download on iPads for free. They pride themselves in being an app that can capture and store all kinds of digital notes that phones and computers can carry, hence the reason for their Elephant logo.Īside from being able to access Evernote as an application, you can also access it via a web browser as well as using different web extensions to capture materials online for your note. Unlike Simplenote, you can add multimedia content into Evernote, so you can store audios and images that you want to reference later on in the application. I discovered Evernote a few years ago when I needed an application on my iPad that I could store all the giveaways that I got from blogs that I often visited. This way I could have my digestible content on the go and not worry about cluttering my email or desktop.Įvernote has become so popular to the extent that it is being used to create sharable workbooks and pamphlets to distribute on occasions such as seminars, training, and even brainstorming sessions. The free version is not available for offline useĪpple Notes have been around for some time now, but it’s the functionalities that they have continued to add that make it a contender among the other big names on this list.Search and tagging features are available.Available on other devices aside from iPads. The app is available for free, however, there’s a premium version that gives you access to more features, but comes with a monthly subscription fee. The app has a good nesting folder that allows you to keep your folders up to five levels deep and you can name your folders with emojis to further express what they are about. 7/22/2023 0 Comments Wolf alice smile"Wolf Alice - 'Blue Weekend' album review". 7/22/2023 0 Comments Hidden folks in chinaIt's a visual explosion of personality and challenge, along with annoyance and redundancy. Some of Hidden Folks' scenes are so large it's utterly overwhelming. I remember "Where's Wally?" being like this too, but being a book existing in the real world, there's limited real estate to work with. That doesn't really work in Hidden Folks for several reasons, one of which being how completely hectic the scene can be. With a hidden object game, you look at the source material and scan the room for said material. There are definitely hints that suck, especially in the final "Factory" chapter that feel very obtuse, but most of them feel well designed which is good since they are absolutely essential to getting anywhere with this game. Even if I can't find someone, often times it felt like it was my fault as the player rather than the game giving me nothing to work with. The majority of the hints given to you are by in large useful. Now whether those riddles are good is another question, the answer to such a question being "yeah, for the most part". It adds a layer of depth not present in other hidden object games or "Where's Wally?" books and really solidifies it as a proper puzzle game. Even better is how each target is hidden behind a riddle which describes their situation or surroundings. It's an interesting switch, as rather than trying to spot the same person in every puzzle, you're constantly readjusting your brain to find a unique target. Hidden Folks take a step up from that, incorporating several guys in a living scene. "Where's Wally" in book form is pretty much limited to "find the guy in a static scene". When adapting something to a video game, you really have to consider what you can achieve in the new medium. I installed and completed the game today in several short sittings, taking about 2 hours in total with around 80% of the games hidden objects found and I've got to say, while I found the game incredibly charming and bursting with personality, I couldn't shake the notion that it's a massive misstep in creating my ideal "Where's Wally?" video game. As is the case with PC gaming, there's just way too much stuff to play at a low cost, so Hidden Folks remained in my wishlist for well over a year until last week where it was unlocked in the Humble Monthly. Initially it was the visual style that grabbed me, but then after reading what it was actually about my interest grew larger. I've had Hidden Folks wishlisted for as long as it's been around. Don't get me wrong I've enjoyed my fair share, but I'd be lying if I said it's high class entertainment. Sure, I guess the idea of finding something in a cluttered scene currently prevails in the "hidden object" genre, but those type of games have always felt like products marketed at a specific group of people i.e. I feel like the concept behind the "Where's Wally?" books is perfect for video games, and yet it never feels like it's been done (excluding the adaptations themselves I guess).
